(1) What is Labour pain ?
Labor pain is the pain perceived because of uterine contractions at regular intervals .
(2) How do I recognize labour pain ?
If you get pains at regular intervals associated with water draining or bloody discharge pv , you may be in labour.
(3) Is it OK if I come after pain starts ?
Usually , Primigravida ( 1 st time mom ) will take approximately eight hours. It can be shorter or longer than this .
If you get regular pains with increasing frequency, starting at 15-20 minutes apart and gradually shortening in intervals , You are in labour and speedup to the labour room.
But it’s always safe to call your obstetrician once you start getting regular contractions !
If you have transportation issues , it’s better to start in the early course itself.
(4) What is false pains?
If the contractions occur at irregular intervals and the intensity of pain remains the same or less , it may be false pain. But it’s ideal to be examined by your obstetrician .
(5) Is it normal to get pains in pregnancy?
Occasional pains(Braxton Hick contractions) are normal in pregnancy. It is more commonly felt in the 3rd trimester . It is felt as tightening of abdomen and relaxing. This helps to prepare the uterus for delivery.
(6) I’m afraid of the pain of labour! Do I have options to handle pain?
Yes. You can attend Antenatal classes in pregnancy and learn ways to tackle this.
You also have medical methods of Painless labour. Discuss with your Doctor about the options .
(7) Can I have my partner during my delivery?
Yes. You can have your partner throughout the course of labour!
(8) Will the pain of labour affect my baby ?
Your baby’s well being will be monitored with special equipments like fetal Doppler and Cardiotocogram. Continuous fetal monitoring is done to pick up problems early.
